Oily Skin Routine: Simple Morning and Evening Steps

Oily skin produces more sebum, but it can still be dehydrated, sensitive or acne-prone. A useful routine controls excess shine and clogged pores without trying to remove every trace of oil. Harsh cleansing and too many drying actives often make the face less comfortable, not healthier.

Morning routine

  1. Cleanse with a gentle foaming or gel cleanser, or rinse with water if your skin is comfortable and not greasy on waking.
  2. Apply one optional treatment, such as niacinamide, when it suits your skin.
  3. Use a lightweight, oil-free or non-comedogenic moisturiser where needed.
  4. Finish with broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher.

The American Academy of Dermatology advises washing oily skin up to twice daily and after sweating, using a gentle cleanser rather than an oil-stripping or alcohol-heavy product.

Evening routine

Remove makeup and water-resistant sunscreen. The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser can serve as an oil-compatible first step; follow with a mild water-based cleanser only when needed.

After cleansing, choose one targeted active. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is intended to support the appearance of oil balance and uneven texture. High percentages can irritate some skin, so start slowly and stop if burning persists.

Where salicylic acid fits

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble and often useful for blackheads and congestion. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution can be introduced on one or two evenings per week, then adjusted according to tolerance and label directions.

Do not combine it immediately with a scrub, strong peel and retinoid. See our salicylic acid guide for a safer introduction.

Oily skin still needs moisturiser

Water loss and excess oil are different issues. Skipping moisturiser can leave skin tight while it remains shiny. Choose a small amount of a light texture. The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA is one uncomplicated option; use less in humid weather if the finish feels heavy.

Manage midday shine without scrubbing

Press blotting paper gently onto shiny areas and lift it away. Do not rub it across the face. Repeated washing during the day can irritate skin; blotting and a compatible sunscreen touch-up are usually more practical.

The Ordinary UV Filters SPF 45 Serum is a fluid sunscreen option. Check its finish with your moisturiser and makeup before relying on the combination for a long day.

When to get professional help

Painful nodules, scarring, sudden severe oiliness or acne that does not improve with consistent over-the-counter care deserves a dermatologist’s assessment. Skincare supports acne management but does not replace medical treatment.
