Sunscreen Under Makeup: How to Prevent Pilling

Pilling happens when skincare or makeup rolls into small flakes instead of forming a smooth film. It is frustrating, but the fix should never be to use too little sunscreen. Start by simplifying the layers and changing how you apply them.

Use the correct order

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends cleansing first, then medication or treatment, followed by moisturiser and/or sunscreen, and makeup last. Sunscreen needs to form an even final skincare film before complexion products go on top.

Choose broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Apply it to all exposed areas and follow the amount and reapplication directions on the label.

Why products pill

Common practical causes include too many thick layers, rubbing each layer for too long, applying the next product before the previous film settles, and combining formulas that do not spread well together. Dry flakes can also catch product and make rolling more visible.

Pilling does not prove that an ingredient is unsafe. It usually reflects texture and film behaviour, although a formula that burns or causes a rash should be stopped.

Build a smoother base

1. Apply lightweight skincare in thin, even layers.
2. Use moisturiser only where you need it; sunscreen may feel moisturising enough for some oily skins.
3. Give the last skincare layer a few minutes to settle.
4. Spread sunscreen evenly without repeatedly rubbing the same area.
5. Let the sunscreen film set before makeup.
6. Press or stipple foundation with a sponge or brush instead of vigorous circular rubbing.

If the surface is flaky, address dryness on previous nights rather than scrubbing immediately before makeup.

Test the sunscreen and base together

Try the combination on one cheek before an important event. Silicone-rich primers, water-heavy gels and film-forming sunscreens can behave differently together. If pilling continues, remove one optional layer at a time to identify the conflict.

Reapplication over makeup
