Vitamin C Morning or Night: When Should You Use It?

Vitamin C serum can be used in the morning or at night. Morning is the conventional choice because topical vitamin C has an antioxidant and photoprotective role that complements sunscreen. Night is still valid when the formula pills under SPF, feels uncomfortable during the day or simply fits your routine better. Consistent use and a stable formula matter more than the clock.

Why morning use is popular

Ultraviolet light and pollution contribute to oxidative stress in skin. Topical vitamin C can help neutralise reactive molecules, while sunscreen reduces the amount of UV reaching the skin. They do different jobs: vitamin C never replaces a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Apply a thin vitamin C serum after cleansing and before moisturiser and sunscreen. Let each layer settle rather than rubbing repeatedly. If several serums make sunscreen roll into flakes, simplify the morning instead of using more product.

When night use makes more sense

Some vitamin C products are rich, oily, gritty or strongly acidic. These textures may sit better in an evening routine. Night application can also make it easier to separate vitamin C from another morning product that causes stinging or pilling.

Moving vitamin C to night does not make it ineffective. Use it after cleansing, then apply moisturiser. On evenings with a retinoid or exfoliating acid, sensitive skin may prefer alternating days rather than stacking every active.

Formula and stability matter

L-ascorbic acid is well studied but can be unstable in water, light and heat. Derivatives may feel gentler and can be easier to formulate, though they do not all have the same evidence or conversion in skin. A dark bottle alone does not guarantee stability.

Store the product closed, away from strong light and heat. Follow the manufacturer’s storage directions. If a formerly pale serum becomes very dark, develops a markedly different smell or changes texture, check the recommended period after opening and consider replacing it.

The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% and The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% are both verified as in stock, but their textures and strengths are not interchangeable. Choose by tolerance, not by the biggest percentage.

A practical starting routine

Morning option

  1. Gentle cleanse or water rinse.
  2. Thin layer of vitamin C.
  3. Moisturiser if needed.
  4. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

Evening option

  1. Remove sunscreen and makeup.
  2. Cleanse gently.
  3. Apply vitamin C.
  4. Finish with moisturiser.

Start every other day if your skin is reactive. Persistent burning, swelling or rash is a reason to stop rather than “push through.” For formula types and concentrations, read the complete Skinora vitamin C guide.
